About this Event

Welcome to Venture Café Providence Thursday Gathering

Join us Thursday, May 6 for conversation and community building on food innovation in Rhode Island. In partnership with the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce Innovation Economy Committee, we will explore investments in Rhode Island’s foodie future and meet with the new leaders sparking food innovation in our state. This is the first event in a new series on Rhode Island innovation with the Chamber’s Innovation Economy Committee.

10:30-11:15 AM LEARN | Research and Development Tax Credits

Nate Carpenter, Consultant with American Incentive Advisors, will show how small and medium-sized businesses can reclaim their R&D tax credits in this free workshop. 90% of businesses are eligible for R&D tax credits, but only 5% apply. If your business has paid taxes over the last 3 years, join us and learn how to reclaim your tax credits.

11:15 – 11:30 AM | Startup Story: Project Pasta

Join us for a Startup Story featuring Chef Jamie Freda of Project Pasta brought to us by Hope & Main. Startup stories showcase local innovators, startups and small businesses with their own session dedicated to sharing what they’ve learned with the Venture Café Community.

Project Pasta is a fresh, vegan pasta line sans gluten and grains based out of Hope & Main, in Warren, RI. We use a proprietary blend of plant-based, sustainable flours to formulate small batches of hand-crafted pasta. Our rendition of traditional pasta is actually comparable in taste and texture to that of pasta with gluten and leaves you feeling good after eating it. Our mission is to address a number of environmental concerns such as soil restoration, monoculture and lack of people engaged in agriculture. We believe that tradition should be preserved, modernized and revolutionized.

11:30 AM – 12:00 PM Cultivating Innovation: Informal Conversations with Rhode Island’s Economic Gardener

Join us for an informal conversation, led by Tuni Schartner, Executive Director of District Hall & Venture Café Providence and RI’s Economic Gardener. Every week Tuni Schartner will lead the conversation with thought leaders from around Rhode Island touching on a number of topics important for innovators, entrepreneurs, and small businesses in Rhode Island.

12:00PM | Panel: Leaders of Food Innovation in Rhode Island

Join us as we explore food innovation from the perspective of leaders in the industry. Laurie White, President of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce will lead this discussion with Julianne Stelmaszyk, Director of Food Strategy for Rhode Island Commerce; Patrick Baur, Assistant Professor of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Rhode Island; and Jason Evans, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Food Innovation & Technology at Johnson & Wales University. The panelists will discuss food system sustainability, new technologies, and more!
