“During a pandemic, what opportunities outside of school are provided for children to develop their own ideas of what it means to be healthy? “

Before COVID-19, ASTRO was already responding to a community challenge that a global pandemic made even more difficult: how do young people learn about and value their health? Because every student has a different experience with school-based health resources, outside-of-school learning opportunities can fill in the gaps. Pawtucket-based ASTRO Academy specializes in promoting social, behavioral, physical, and financial health through arts, sports, and technology. Since the pandemic, they’ve secured a contract with the RI Department of Education to run programs that help students make up for learning time lost from being out of school, and they are offering some courses for college credit. By helping students practice self-awareness and empathy through creative and physical activities, ASTRO is raising the bar for how community members both young and older show up for their individual well-being.
