COVID-19 Hits: What Happens to Education Access for the Formerly Incarcerated?

Across the country, prisons are being hit hard by COVID-19 with little discussion around the impact the crisis will have on recidivism rates going forward. Some organizations aim to address this issue, and one of them in Rhode Island is Reentry Campus Program. With a mission to increase postsecondary education graduation rates and provide a pathway for individuals who are coming home from prison, Reentry Campus focuses on supporting people who are transitioning between taking college courses in prison and being able to use what they’ve learned outside. Founder and director James Monteiro calls on his hard-won experience to help guide currently and formerly incarcerated individuals along a path toward postsecondary success. Reentry Campus participants who are still incarcerated can earn college credits by passing exams and after their release matriculate into local universities, including Roger Williams University and Community College of RI. Hear how this model is working during the COVID-19 crisis and how the program makes a case for prison education as a catalyst for lowering recidivism rates.
